Description

The main body of the monograph employs a comparative approach employing the well-established diseases influenza and other respiratory viruses as signposts that may facilitate a deeper understanding these established diseases and how services might optimize their responses. The results of the analysis are based on a 16-year dataset. The dataset contains diagnostic and demographic information based on approximately 90 Million records for about 0.75 million people of all ages.

Working with this dataset over a decade has facilitated the development of analytical approaches referenced in the monograph and published in peer-reviewed journals, such as the British Journal of Psychiatry, among others. The published work has led (in part) to the development of a morbidity section in the World Psychiatry Association's annual congress. However, as this monograph has not been peer-reviewed, it will be up to the reader to decide its merits or deficits. A near-identical approach to the development and verification of the algorithms underpinning the present analysis has been employed that was similar to that used in other published analyses (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29971152).

Recently, media has come to focus on the bio-psycho-social aspects of pandemic. Therefore, in addition to examining the cumulative costs, counts of unique individuals, annual and average per capita rates, etc., throughout the analyses the comparative differences observed based on the effect of the presence or absence of physician-diagnosed mental disorder are included. These findings in addition to the associated multi-morbidity may help health systems plan for the future.
